Argentine Tango Hip Hop Hybrid

Picture
Tango has become my life. Though I maintain contact with the hip hop world through my website, and sharing my music in educational settings, my day to day is dedicated to this dance. 2010 took me to 15 tango festivals in cities across the nation. Taking as many classes as possible, performing my tango raps, and dancing nearly every Tanda has become a way of life for me. In May of 2010, while still living in Ashland, OR I started teaching my first 8 week series on musicality and connection through Southern Oregon University. Since moving to Portland, OR in October 2010 I've maintained a healthy teaching and dancing relationship with both the university and the community at large. Every time I pass through ashland I offer classes on some portion of tango that I understand and feel will be a valuable addition to the community of dancers there.

Argentine Tango and Hip Hop at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival "Green Show" July 3rd 2010

Hardly any footage popped up on youtube of this incredible show. Here's a summary for those who missed it. 1500 audience members, only a handful of which danced tango. I come out on stage rapping with no beat the lyrics to "A Hold in Tango" for almost three minutes. Then a song (True Tanguera) then another (Follow Through) joined by Janalee Swain on backup vocals, then another song (I Adore you) by Janalee Swain. Guest Rapper: Me. Then Janalee and I dance, To the Song "Dos" by the Group "Narcotango". Keep in mind we'd only been dancing nine months at the time of this performance. Scary. Awesome. The crowd was very receptive, almost like they were cheering for us to succeed not just cheering because they were entertained. Of course, preceding our dance, I let them know how long we'd been dancing and also of the social, improvisational nature of the dance. Following our dance, Dominic Bridge and Jenna Rohrbacher performed to two traditional Tango songs and one Milonga. Immediately following their final song, I jump back on stage and request the opportunity to share the stage with them for one final dance. It's a vals. Nearly thirty tango dancers, planted in the audience hear the music and rush the stage. The audience erupts. Following the vals, we all dance to La Cumparsita. At the conclusion of the show the whole group turns and walks their separate ways almost as if it'd been just another social dance. It was truly beautiful.

"A Hold In Tango" One of my favorite tango raps... Tells the story of the heartbreak that helped lead me into the tango world as well as my difficulty learning close embrace and the success I found once it clicked.

-James Friedgen

"Hi Momo, I've had a moment to listen to several songs from the two CD's that you gave us.
Thanks. They're great. You're really good. I'm glad that you're actually investing time in Tango.
You could be the next great rapper with a world tour instead of getting obsessed with tango!
Maybe you'll be able to do both and really help tango reach the next level of public awareness."
-Homer Ladas
Argentine Tango Instructor and Musician. San Francisco, California

"You the Man"
-Ray Barbosa

judging from your lyrics, same porosity of heart."
-Daniel Boardman
